MSc Data Science

The MSc Data Science trains highly qualified data analysts and scientists for careers across a wide range of industries. The programme provides a strong practical and theoretical grounding in data mining and statistics, with the opportunity to specialise in artificial intelligence, visualisation, programming or database manipulation.

It is one of the most established programmes of its kind, with over 18 years of history, and is delivered by a Data Science and Artificial Intelligence research community with more than a decade of significant academic and industry contributions, including collaborations with organisations such as Aviva, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and national policing and air traffic bodies.

What the Programme Covers

• Data mining and statistical methods, including Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD).
• Metaheuristics for rule and tree induction, clustering, feature selection and time-series classification.
• Artificial intelligence and/or data visualisation (as a specialisation route).
• Programming and database manipulation for data science.
• Applications across financial services, medicine, agritech and telecommunications.
• Professional and soft-skills development, including hands-on use of data mining software.
• An independent, supervised dissertation project exploring a real topic or industry problem.

Programme Structure

• Compulsory modules in Professional Skills, Data Mining, Statistics, and a choice of Artificial Intelligence or Visualisation.
• Optional Module Group A (20–40 credits).
• Optional Module Group B (20–40 credits) options span Python for Data Science, database.
• manipulation, computer vision, audio/visual processing and research topics
  Dissertation module.
